BD: Advancing health, advancing careers

Mar 11, 2020 - Heather Dewis

The work.

More than 123 years of innovation. More than 65,000 employees worldwide. One of the largest global medical technology companies in the world, it’s easy to see the impact BD has on medical discovery, diagnostics, and delivery of care. By developing innovative technology and services, BD aims to advance both clinical therapy for patients and the clinical process for healthcare providers.

Advancing the world of health isn’t only the company’s purpose, but a mantra that resonates with many of its associates—some of whom have been patients connected to BD products themselves. Jonathan, an R&D developer at BD, was running a marathon when he passed out. “I woke up surrounded by all these BD products that were supporting my journey back to health,” he says. “That’s meaningful to me and my work.”

The perks.

Associates like Jonathan collaborate in modern spaces that inspire cutting-edge projects, then recharge with on-site yoga and circuit training, or coffee breaks with coworkers from the local barista. Plus, associates can participate in flexible work programs that allow them to achieve work-life balance, and take full advantage of San Diego’s always-beautiful weather—whether that means hiking a nearby trail or participating in cycling fundraising events like Padres Pedal the Cause.

Named one of Fortune’s ‘Top 5 Companies to Change the World,’ BD focuses on empowering its associates–equipping team members to do what they are passionate about while also make a local and global impact through social investing. The company sponsors an annual BD Volunteer Service Trip, which give associates the opportunity to participate in meaningful service activities, in some of the most disadvantaged places in the world.

Additionally, BD has been recognized as one of the Best Places for Women & Diverse Managers to Work, which alludes to the company’s biggest perk of fostering an environment that supports the development of inclusive and diverse teams. Vanditha, BD Pyxis™ IV Prep product marketing manager, moved to San Diego from Minnesota. While she likes the warmer weather, she says, “I enjoy my work and the impact it has on patients, [as well as] the flexible working hours and diversity.”

The support.

Finally, BD celebrates the diverse backgrounds and experiences of its employees through associate resource groups like the Veteran Employees and Troop Support (VETS) group who support veterans transitioning into the workforce, and the Women’s Initiative Network (WIN), which sponsored this year’s International Women’s Day celebration. BD is proud to celebrate #IWD2020 and keep pushing for progress toward a gender equal world. Learn how the BD team lives and breathes #EachForEqual every day on the official International Women’s Day website.
