2026 State of San Diego: Hottest jobs, things to do, and ways to grow
Feb 25, 2026 - Emily Chowaniec
Life moves fast when you’re having fun in San Diego—and this past year was no exception. San Diegans found new opportunities for growth, flourished in their careers, and enjoyed the sunny forecast. With another successful year behind us, here’s where our region stands heading into 2026.
Love where you live
San Diego continued to prove why people fall in love with living here. With an irresistible blend of coastal beauty, cultural diversity, and the best eats in SoCal (not that we’re biased), it’s safe to say we’ve earned our title of “America’s Finest City”.
Turns out this wasn’t just a vibe we were feeling; the Happy City Index ranked San Diego the third happiest city in the U.S. and Condé Nast Traveler recognized us as the second-best big city in America, reinforcing what we already know: our region delivers on both quality of life and big city energy.
The forecast stayed sunny this year with 277 days of sunshine, making it easy to understand why spending time outdoors is more of a daily routine than a hobby.
Visitors weren’t just stopping by though; San Diegans welcomed home 10,000 new neighbors, proving it’s better to live our lifestyle than settle for a taste. And that lifestyle shows up everywhere. From more than 70 miles of coastline and 360 miles of hiking trails stretching from the mountains to the Pacific, San Diego offers something new to experience around every corner. Whether you’re trying one of the more than 70 new bars and restaurants that opened in 2025, or playing golf like a pro at Torrey Pines, San Diego makes it easy to love where you live.

Opportunity starts here
With nearly 10,000 businesses across the region, ranging from startups to household names, San Diego isn’t just a place to find a job; it’s a place to build a career.
Lightcast tells us that in 2025, the region said hello to more than 40,000 job postings for early-career professionals, at a median salary of $75,500. For those ready to turn ambition into action, opportunity isn’t far away.
Entry-level job seekers can dream big and make even bigger bucks as software engineers, research associates, and financial analysts, with median salaries ranging from an impressive $102,000 to $160,000. And in a shifting job market, the hottest in-demand early-career jobs for San Diego workers were medical assistants, accountants, and administrative assistants. While so many companies live under the San Diego sun, keep your eye on top companies like General Atomics, Rady Children’s Hospital, and Qualcomm that led the way in posting jobs for early-career professionals, with median hourly pay ranging from $34 to $64.
But landing the job is half the story; loving where you work matters just as much. If you’re looking for a place to fall in love with, companies like Aya Healthcare, Red Door Interactive, and San Diego Humane Society were recognized among San Diego Union-Tribune’s Top Workplaces for 2025, and LPL Financial, Illumina, and Sony Electronics earned national recognition for LGBTQ+ workplace equality.
For those drawn to entrepreneurship, San Diego’s startup scene is thriving. With 1,875 active startups and programs like Startup San Diego, Techstars San Diego, and SDx, the region helps entrepreneurs turn big ideas into real growth. It just goes to show: San Diego isn’t only where you work—it’s where you build what’s next.

Keep growing
Graduation isn’t a goodbye—it’s a beginning. And for many grads, that beginning starts right here. Across San Diego’s colleges and universities, more than 60 percent of graduates choose to remain in our region after graduation, launching their careers in the same vibrant place they studied.
Your first job is just the start. Lucky for us, many San Diego companies and institutions offer incredible programs to help you take the next step in your career. Scripps Research, for example, offers mentorship programs, while industry groups like Bicom lead professional development programs—helping you grow your network and advance your career in the same place you started it.
And whether you’re earning a degree or building new skills, San Diego makes it easy to keep leveling up. The San Diego Community College District offers more than 300 career education certificates and degrees, and UCSD Extended Studies provides more than 100 professional courses and certifications designed to help you upskill, pivot industries, and stay competitive in the post-grad market. National University offers four- and eight-week online and hybrid courses with year-round enrollment, making it possible to grow your career while still living the San Diego life—even if that means catching a wave between classes.
The transition to the working world is hard, but you won’t have to figure it out alone. Local colleges and universities including Mesa College, CSUSM, and SDSU offer mentorship and alumni networks that help connect students directly with industry professionals, helping you step confidently from the classroom into your career.
