Fifteen minutes north of better-known, hip neighborhoods like North Park and Hillcrest, Poway is an underrated gem. You won’t find music festivals or trendy boutiques here, and that’s okay. Poway’s residents – STEM professionals and growing families – love the city’s kid-friendly restaurants, community events, and surrounding natural attractions.

For San Diegans, it’s not news that Poway is the place to settle down and build a family. Rows of single-family homes sit along the winding, tree-lined streets, plus the city boasts one of the best school districts in the state and the country. If you’re moving here, it’s easy to make new friends. Local organizations host events for all ages: hiking club at the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, teen ice skating excursions and movie nights, and seasonal events like the Winter Festival at Poway Community Park.
Convenience is key for this San Diego-style suburbia. After work, locals flock to shopping centers at the center of the city, replete with big-box stores, chain restaurants, and movie theatres. But it’s not all big chains – Poway is a great place to start and support mom and pop restaurants. Find sweet and savory crepes at Wholly Crepe, crispy pork sisig at Halo Halo Café and Ice Cream Parlor, or chicken kabobs at Baba Kabob. Here, residents get to enjoy the best for themselves – and for their kids.
Take a hike – it’s the thing to do.
Another weekend, another hike. If you live in Poway, chances are your friends and coworkers will invite you to join them on the beautiful Iron Mountain trail, or up Mt. Woodson to one of San Diego’s most photographed places – Potato Chip Rock. All ages can enjoy the easy walk around Poway Pond, or the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve’s riverside trail (even leashed dogs are welcome on this one). And if you want a challenge, advanced hikers will enjoy a quick but demanding trip up the Twin Peaks Trail. The reward at the summit? Beautiful 360 degree views of the city and surrounding mountains.

Poway is arguably the place to be for early to mid-career STEM professionals. Residents usually work at some of San Diego’s most-recognized tech companies. Teradata, General Atomics, Sony, Northrop Grumman…sound familiar? But Poway isn’t just another place to make a living at a desk job. If big companies are your thing, it’s where defense giants develop tomorrow’s unmanned aircraft. If you love the entrepreneurial grind, up-and-coming startups here are creating artificial intelligence systems for drones. The best part? Most are an easy 10 to 15 minute commute from the city’s residential areas.
