Life in San Diego: La Jolla
Nov 04, 2019 - Heather Dewis
La Jolla is a well-known travel gem, but it’s also perfect for a local, day-long staycation. You’ve got the surf, the views, and let’s not forget the amazing restaurant selection for all you foodies. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this jam-packed 1-day itinerary in San Diego’s crown jewel.
Wake up and smell the freshly roasted coffee.
La Jolla is home to a cluster of high-quality, unassuming local coffee shops. If you’re on the go, try Bird Rock Coffee Roasters’ sustainably produced, no-frills brews or Brick & Bell’s fresh scones. Locals head to Pannikin Coffee & Tea and The Living Room Cafe for great views while they sip coffee and work.
For something more substantial, grab breakfast at Food Network star Chef Maeve’s Sugar and Scribe, celebrity chef Brian Malarkey’s Farmer & the Seahorse, or dog-friendly Shorehouse Kitchen. And if you’re swinging by UC San Diego, try The Bella Vista Social Club and Caffé for tasty omelettes and an ocean view.
Adventure is out here. And La Jolla is family-friendly.
After breakfast, head beachside for family (and dog!) -friendly paths along the cliffs. Farther south, walk down to the Children’s Pool La Jolla to watch harbor seals and their pups sleeping on the beach.
If you’re up for an adventure outdoors, you’re in the perfect place. Take advantage of always-gorgeous weather by hiking your choice of trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, kayaking through the La Jolla Sea Caves, or taking a surf lesson – great waves always included.
A night out on the town.
Unlike other regions, San Diego’s downtown isn’t the only place threatening you with a good time. La Jolla is home to the infamous foodie spot Din Tai Fung, rightfully hyped speakeasy Raised by Wolves, the original Puesto and The Taco Stand restaurants, Concerts by the Sea, and the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. If you’re feeling extra funky, we recommend checking out Galaxy Taco for a, you guessed it, out-of-this-world experience. No exaggeration, earthlings.
And if you’re looking for a more elevated date spot, The Marine Room boasts true seaside dining – enjoy fresh seafood as waves crash against the restaurant’s big bay windows. Finish your evening at the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial, enjoying a nearly 360-degree view of San Diego’s city lights.
