San Marcos
WHO will love living in San Marcos?
San Marcos encompasses a broader spectrum of residents including recent grads from Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos who are making the transition to professional life, young families, and retirees who prefer the open space versus the more condensed and highly trafficked neighborhoods around the county.
WHAT will you see?
Golf courses, rolling hillsides, and schools and students everywhere. In addition to the two colleges, there are several elementary, middle, and high schools that make up the San Marcos Unified School District. However, it’s not your average suburb. Between the barns, fields, and Lake San Marcos, there’s a farm-like feel to the town which gives it a whimsical air of another era.
WHERE will you eat?
San Marcos is home to “Old California Restaurant Row,” which first started as a fruit and vegetable stand in the late 1970s. Now the area is home to 15 restaurants ranging in choices from Thai to Chinese and Mexican to seafood. To get a feel for the gold rush days, stop by Old California Mining Company for steakhouse classics and weekly daily specials. And, on Sundays, you can visit the farmers market from 11 AM to 3 PM, make a meal out of sampling food from all of the local vendors, and take home fresh produce for your own farm-to-table feast.
HOW will you spend your time?
Take a hike. Whether it’s a walk along the flat land around Discovery Lake or up 1,000 feet at Double Peak for a 5-mile round-trip trek, hiking is a favorite pastime in San Marcos.. If you’d prefer to spend time outdoors in a less strenuous way, head to the Twin Oaks Golf Course for a lesson on the greens or a take a distillery tour at The California Spirits Company. Maybe that last one doesn’t count as physical activity but we can still raise a glass to a good time.
WHY you’ll love living here?
It has the small-town charm with the convenience of a bigger city. Nearly every weekend, there’s a free festival, car show, or art walk where parking never seems to be a problem and the crowds are always friendly. Take advantage of the ample space and lake and mountain scenery that surrounds this North County neighborhood.
