Web Design / Front-End Software Developer Intern
Company:
GradeScan Inc
Industry:
Education
Company Website:
Position Type:
Computing, Graphic Design
Weekly Hours:
26-40 hours (Full time)
Modality:
Remote
Description:
GradeScan is seeking a motivated front-end software developer intern with a strong affinity for graphic design to support the continued development of our AI-enabled platform that helps teachers administer secure, paper-based assessments and reduce cheating/unethical conduct. You’ll gain hands-on experience building real product features, collaborating closely with the founder, and contribute code that directly impacts how educators use paper-based assessments. This role is ideal for students interested in software engineering, graphic design, EdTech, and applied AI who want practical experience shipping production-quality software. Part-time or full-time (flexible around class schedule)
What you’ll do
• Review the existing product UI and marketing site; propose and implement improvements to layout, typography, color, spacing, and iconography with a teacher-first usability mindset.
• Design and build UI patterns that reduce friction for core teacher workflows (setup, administration, review).
• Create and refine visual assets (icons, illustrations, product imagery, simple brand elements) using modern design tools and ship them into production.
• Resolve UI/UX defects and polish issues surfaced in our GitHub issue tracker. Typical themes include confusing error states, inconsistent UI behavior, unexpected visual states (checkbox/icon/cursor issues), layout glitches, and data refresh / “frame update” anomalies.
• Work with a project manager to scope and prioritize work; present concepts, incorporate feedback, and document final decisions.
• Update written documentation, User Guide, and keep our internal AI-assistant knowledge base current using proprietary tooling.
What you’ll learn
• How to design and implement UI for real classroom workflows (high trust, low tolerance for UX friction).
• How to ship changes safely inside a large production Single Page Application—potentially one of the world’s largest SPAs—where maintainability and consistency are critical.
• Practical front-end engineering: component architecture, UI state management, performance tuning, debugging, and regression prevention.
• How product UI and marketing intersect: landing pages, campaigns, onboarding, and in-app guidance.
• End-to-end product development workflow (feature development → review → release) and how educator needs translate into usable, dependable software.
Preferred skills (not all required)
• Strong programming fundamentals (architecture basics, debugging, data structures, version control).
• TypeScript + Angular (or strong interest and ability to learn quickly).
• HTML/CSS, responsive design, UI component patterns; comfortable working with third-party UI controls.
• Familiarity with API concepts (REST, auth, DTOs) and integrating UI with backend services.
• Git-based workflows (branches, pull requests, code review).
• Comfort with modern dev tooling (Visual Studio Code, Copilot, ChatGPT) and cloud fundamentals (Azure) is a plus.
• Bonus: accessibility awareness, performance profiling, UX writing instincts.
Tech stack (front-end emphasis)
• Primary: Angular + TypeScript (Single Page Application)
• UI: HTML/CSS, responsive design, component patterns, third-party controls
• Supporting: RESTful backend services (C#/.NET)
What we value
• Teacher-centered product instincts: simple, predictable, and efficient.
• Curiosity and judgment—knowing when to ask questions vs. make a call.
• Strong attention to detail (alignment, spacing, states, copy, error handling).
• Ownership: you follow issues end-to-end and communicate status clearly.
• The tenacity to hunt bugs to extinction.
