Dreaming of a scientific community free from bureaucracy in 1976, Scientists Lillian and William Fishman founded the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation. Fast-forward to today, and the nonprofit Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute - or SBPdiscovery as they're known on Instagram - is one of the top research institutions in the country.
At Sanford Burnham Prebys, scientists are working to understand the root cause of serious diseases affecting our society today —including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and more. They're also looking to develop new approaches to bring better treatments to patients living with challenging diseases. Pretty life-changing, if you ask us.
Check out Sanford Burnham Prebys' #TakeoverTuesday and you'll get to meet some of the faces that are curing diseases and changing the world for the better. They're people like Marisa Sanchez, a scientist trying to undercover how cancer thrives, while also scaling Mt. Everest in her spare time and Katja Birker, a researcher looking to uncover the genetic underpinnings of heart disease, who dreamed of doing a Ph.D. in San Diego.
"Being located in San Diego is critical to our Institute’s success because of the amazing life sciences resources located here. We can literally walk across the street and talk to scientists and doctors at Salk Institute; University of California, San Diego; Scripps Clinic; and Scripps Research; not to mention the hundreds of biotech companies and startups also located on the Torrey Pines Mesa."
We couldn't agree more, Sanford Burnham Prebys.
